Figueres wastewater plant plans system to generate energy from sludge

The ACA is tendering a project to transform organic waste into biogas for self-consumption.

The Catalan Water Agency has launched a tender to draft a project allowing the Figueres wastewater treatment plant to utilize residual sludge for self-consumption energy generation.

The contract, with a budget of 145,000 euros, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The main objective is to define the technical specifications for a new treatment and cogeneration facility that will valorize the biogas obtained during the purification process.
Currently, the Figueres plant has the capacity to treat 17,000 cubic meters of water daily, but the resulting sludge is used as fertilizer without any energy recovery. The new facility will include an anaerobic digester that will decompose organic matter in an oxygen-free environment, reducing waste volume and improving its quality.
This initiative is part of the energy efficiency plan that the ACA has been developing since 2019. The program aims to increase renewable energy generation in public wastewater plants in Catalonia, which covered 18.6% of their electricity consumption with clean sources in 2025, with a forecast to reach 25% by 2027.
