The Spanish Cabinet approved on Tuesday an increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) to 1,221 euros per month, directly affecting 19,000 workers in the Girona province.

The 3.1% rise was agreed upon by the Government and labor unions. In Girona, this measure impacts approximately 5.9% of the workforce, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, cleaning services, and domestic work.

"The increase over recent years is spectacular. And we haven't destroyed anything in Spain, we are at record employment levels."

Yolanda Díaz · Second Vice President and Minister of Labor
The new SMI will be exempt from Income Tax (IRPF) and is retroactive to January 1st. Employers must now adjust payrolls to include back pay, bringing the total annual cost per employee to approximately 22,600 euros including social security contributions.
