Promoted by the Institut d'Estudis Empordanesos and guided by historian Jordi Vives Faig, this initiative is based on a project presented last December. The route allows participants to delve into spaces not usually open to the public, such as the old parish schools or the interior of Sant Domènec.
“"This is not a typical route; it is very participatory, multidirectional, and everyone contributes by sharing their experience."
The proposal aims to capture the spirit of collaboration that has characterized the entire project, with residents contributing photographs, documents, oral testimonies, and objects related to the Republic, the Civil War, and Francoism. The main goal is to 'understand the past'.
The first sessions of the route have been very well received. New dates have already been scheduled for Friday, April 4, with sessions at 11 AM in Peralada and at 4:30 PM in Vilanova de la Muga. There will also be sessions on Saturday, April 5 at 11 AM in Peralada and on Saturday, April 11. To participate, registration is required at the Centre de Turisme Sant Domènec in Peralada.
A fundamental part of this route draws from the research of Jordi Vives Faig, which is expected to be published as a book in 2026. However, Vives emphasizes that the project's purpose goes beyond a publication, seeking to generate 'a shared process of memory recovery' with 'social utility' to strengthen collective consciousness.
The year 2026 will be dedicated to dissemination and the collection of new materials, including the recording of oral testimonies. Vives highlights the urgency of preserving these narratives, as people who directly experienced the Civil War and post-war period, as well as their descendants, disappear each year, making it essential to transmit these testimonies to new generations to maintain the emotional and community link with the past.
