Roses and Platja d'Aro Beaches Deploy AI to Prevent Drownings

The municipalities of Roses and Platja d’Aro have implemented an artificial intelligence system to enhance safety on their beaches and prevent drownings.

The municipalities of Roses (Alt Empordà) and Platja d’Aro (Baix Empordà) in Girona have launched an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance system aimed at preventing drownings on their beaches. In Platja d’Aro, a camera has been installed in the Ridaura area, south of the main beach, while in Roses, a pilot test has been conducted on the beach adjacent to the Santa Margarida inlet, one of the busiest.
These projects, managed by the company Pro-Activa Serveis Aquàtics, utilize video surveillance cameras that transmit images to a central hub. From there, the coastal situation is analyzed in real-time, and an alert is sent to the corresponding lifeguard service if an emergency is detected.
The AI system is not intended to replace human lifeguards but to complement their work. Its primary goal is to identify individuals who may be drowning or experiencing a health complication in the water, particularly those cases that are not immediately obvious.
In Platja d’Aro, the system became operational at the beginning of summer. In Roses, the pilot test took place in August and will extend until September. If successful, the expansion of this technology to other urban beaches in the municipality is being considered.
