The Basilica of Santa Maria in Castelló d’Empúries will host this Sunday, August 30th, the premiere of El Romanç de Guillem Escarrer. This production by Novum Organum, inspired by the figure of the knight from Empordà, is the main artistic novelty of the XXXIV edition of Terra de Trobadors. The performance will begin at 6:30 PM and admission will be free.
The show, an original creation promoted by the City Council of Castelló d’Empúries, revives the figure of Guillem Escarrer (1266-1321), a knight from Castelló who had a distinguished career in the service of the Kingdom of Naples. This year, Escarrer will be the common thread of the Terra de Trobadors festival. This premiere will allow the discovery of a proposal that combines live music, narration, and historical accuracy, emulating ancient medieval epic songs.
The production has been created by Novum Organum, a company composed of actors, musicians, musicologists, and specialists in historical music. The text is by Marcel Leal, based on research by medievalist Elvis Mallorquí. This initiative reinforces Terra de Trobadors' commitment to merging historical dissemination with contemporary artistic creation. Participants will include Ana Cristina Vicente (vocals, hurdy-gurdy, and percussion), Marcel Leal (recorders, percussion, and narration), María de Mingo (cítola), Gabriel Lorenzo (psaltery, percussion, and narration), and Anna Casademunt (bowed vielle).
This performance is part of the XI So de Lonh Music Cycle, which brings medieval and ancient music to the Basilica of Santa Maria. The cycle includes two free performances. Following this premiere, on September 6th, Locus Desperatus will present the concert A pocho a pocho moro e vivo pocho, dedicated to Marturià Prats and music in the chapel of the Infante Fortuna. Admission to all concerts is free until full capacity.
