According to the latest report from the European Union Agency for Drugs, 13% of Spaniards aged 15 to 64 have consumed cocaine at least once. This figure significantly surpasses that of countries like France and Denmark (9.4%) or the Netherlands (8%). In Catalonia, lifetime consumption rises to 18.7%, with 4.1% having used it in the last 12 months.
Regarding cannabis, Spain is also among the countries with higher consumption, with two out of ten young people (15-34 years old) having smoked it in the past year, exceeding the EU average (15.3%). Experts suggest that low prices and wide availability, facilitated by the drug's arrival through Spanish, Belgian, and Dutch ports, contribute to this high consumption. In 2024, Spain seized 124 tons of cocaine, accounting for 38% of the EU total.
Concerning cannabis resin (hashish), Spain primarily acts as an entry point to Europe from Morocco. In 2025, 257 tons of hashish were seized, a 29% increase from the previous year, although this remains below previous years' records such as 2023 (357 tons).
The report from the Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) also details the seizure of 875,000 cannabis plants and 658,000 ecstasy pills, among other substances.
Sources from the Ministry of the Interior attribute the 37% drop in cocaine seizures to police pressure on drug trafficking networks, particularly on maritime routes. However, the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) denounces a loss of effectiveness in Andalusia since the elimination of Ocon-Sur, pointing to an increase in hashish seizures despite a drop in arrests.
Recently, the Guardia Civil arrested 10 members of a criminal organization in Huelva, seizing two drug-smuggling speedboats and 5,962 kilograms of hashish.
