The Generalitat Government has declared the urgent occupation of assets to expropriate the Vilaüt pond, covering 29 hectares, located within the integral reserve of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, in the municipality of Pau, to ensure its conservation.

The Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition and Spokesperson, Sílvia Paneque, announced the agreement that ends years of attempts to recover the area, which will now become public property. The main objective is to manage the natural space to carry out a conservation project and ensure its water supply.

"one of the jewels in the field of freshwater mass water of the Aiguamolls"

This action, which dates back to discussions initiated in 1984, was accelerated due to the state of biodiversity and water masses. Although actions began in 2008 and a restoration project was presented in 2023, the private ownership of the estate had generated management problems, occasionally preventing the necessary water contribution for regeneration.
The forced expropriation was formally initiated in January 2023 after it was not possible to close any purchase or exchange agreement with the private owners. Now, under public ownership, the Government will work to guarantee adequate flooding periods with quality water, using the concession of 17,000 m³/year from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), sourced from the Muga irrigation system.
