The president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, appeared before the press yesterday to demand the resignation of Minister Óscar Puente and Counselor Sílvia Paneque, citing their inability to resolve the severe railway network crisis in Catalonia.

The new suspension of the Rodalies service, decided on Saturday, caused a change in tone among the Government partners, ERC and Comuns. The Republican leader justified his request by arguing that the two Socialist politicians have shown a “manifest incapacity” to face and explain the problems of the railway network and the AP-7 highway.

"In practical terms, they have already resigned from their responsibilities. We ask them to be consistent and resign in the formal aspects as well."

This strategic shift by ERC, a main partner of both the Salvador Illa and Pedro Sánchez governments, could jeopardize the possibility of quick negotiations to approve the Generalitat budgets. Junqueras reiterated that before discussing the accounts, the initiative in the Congress for the Generalitat to collect 100% of the IRPF must be unlocked.
The Comuns, for their part, demanded that the central Government “show their face,” and their parliamentary spokesperson, David Cid, pointed to Puente as the “maximum responsible” and “absent,” although he avoided calling for his resignation. ERC also requested that the Government facilitate teleworking while the service is being restored.
