The festival, promoted by CinemÀfriques and the Fons Català de Cooperació al Desenvolupament (Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation), consolidates its presence in Catalonia with the aim of disseminating contemporary African cinema and that of its diasporas.
The program in Gelida will consist of two sessions at the Centre Cultural, located on the upper floor of the Biblioteca Jaume Vila i Pascual. The screenings will address topics such as the right to housing, forced displacement, community resistance, memory, identity, migration, and cultural transmission.
The first session, on Friday, October 2nd at 6:30 PM, will include the short film Langue Maternelle by Mariame N'Diaye, which reflects on language and cultural transmission in migrant families, and the feature film The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos by the collective The Agbajowo Collective, which deals with urban speculation and community resistance in Lagos.
The second session, on Saturday, November 21st at 6:30 PM, will present As Aventuras do Angosat, co-directed by Catalan journalist Marc Serena and Angolan filmmaker Resem Verkron, which blends music, activism, and science fiction. Memory of the Princess Mumbi by Damien Hauser, an afrofuturist proposal on identity and possible futures from often absent perspectives in dominant audiovisual narratives, will also be screened.
In addition to the free public screenings, FICAC will organize outreach activities at the Institut Gelida to introduce African cinema to young audiences and foster critical reflection on the themes addressed in the films.
This initiative seeks cultural decentralization and the dissemination of cinemas not widely present in commercial circuits, offering new perspectives on contemporary African societies and valuing the diversity of narratives, languages, experiences, and contexts that make up the African continent and its diasporas.
