The political group Junts-Impulsem Penedès strongly urged the Spanish and Catalan governments to unblock vital infrastructure projects for the Alt Penedès region. Key demands include the construction of new entry and exit points for the AP-7 highway in Vilafranca del Penedès, both towards Barcelona and Tarragona, and the unlocking of the future intermodal railway station.
“"We want the Catalan and Spanish governments to commit to vital actions such as the fourth lane of the AP-7, the AP-7 access points in Vilafranca, or the train station. These are projects that if not done correctly now, we will be dragging the negative consequences for the next 50 years."
The mayor of Cunit and provincial deputy, Jaume Casañas, was particularly explicit in his criticism, noting that the territory cannot continue to be merely a transit zone that endures problems without gaining benefits. He stressed that the Gelida accident highlighted the strategic relevance of the Penedès for the mobility of the entire country.
“"We must make them see that we will not continue to be the useful idiots of the territory. The Penedès must benefit from the infrastructures that cross it and not just be a transit zone that endures the problems."
The president of the Alt Penedès Regional Council and mayor of Guardiola de Font-rubí, Xavier Lluch, described the situation as a “critical moment,” citing the example of residents who took two hours and forty-five minutes to travel from Barcelona to Vilafranca by train. Deputy Montse Ortiz added the necessity of activating the Penedès Mobility Board before the current interurban bus service concession ends in 2028.
