The Forest Fire Prevention Special Group (GEPIF) has intensified controlled burns in Alt Urgell and Pallars this winter to regenerate grazing areas and enhance forest safety.

These strategic interventions, ongoing since November, aim to reverse shrub encroachment on grasslands in key locations such as Taús and Montardit. The goal is twofold: to facilitate livestock grazing and to create safety buffers against large-scale wildfires.

"When we receive a request, we check if the terrain is viable, create safety strips and, if the weather allows, we burn."

The Department of Agriculture task force has expanded significantly in 2024, doubling its staff to 60 members. Operating from eight regional bases, GEPIF plans 13 more interventions in the coming weeks across Pallars Jussà, Alta Ribagorça, and Ripollès.
