Oliana Reservoir Releases Water to Manage Increased Segre River Flow

The measure aims to create reserve capacity in anticipation of forecasted rains and the final phase of snowmelt, which have significantly raised the reservoir's level.

The Oliana reservoir has initiated a discharge of nearly 100 m3/s to create reserve capacity, anticipating potential surges in the Segre river due to forecasted rains and the final stage of snowmelt.

This action was taken after the reservoir reached a 97% filling level last Monday, with a volume of 82 hectometers cubed. This figure represents an increase of almost 20 hectometers cubed in just ten days, showing an accelerated filling rate that went from 54 hm3 to 82 hm3 between April 7 and April 27.
The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) previously informed the local council of the decision to activate the spillway discharge. Subsequently, Civil Protection issued an alert recommending the closure of crossings, fords, and access points to the river course, as well as warning individuals engaged in river activities.
The released flow was 99.4 m3/s, with 35 m3/s through the gate and the remainder through the power plant. This maneuver allowed for increased space in the reservoir, keeping the Segre river's flow below 30 m3/s in the Mid Segre, despite the river flowing through Organyà at 77 m3/s, a result of the combined flows from the Valira and the headwaters reaching La Seu d'Urgell.
Concurrently, recorded rainfall left precipitation levels below 10 l/m2 in various locations across Lleida. The most significant readings were in Pont de Suert with 9 l/m2 and Torre de Capdella with 7.6 l/m2 over the last 24 hours. In the plain, Alguaire, in Segrià, recorded 4.1 l/m2. Weather forecasts indicate storms and light showers in Pallars and Alt Urgell.
