The DO Cava Regulatory Council has announced that, for the most part, grape purchase prices from the previous season will be maintained for the production of Cava de Guarda and Cava de Guarda Superior. This decision will inject approximately 100 million euros directly to winegrowers in the territory, representing the main agricultural income for the regions of Penedès, Anoia, and Garraf, affecting over 6,200 families.
The presence of organic vineyards has grown steadily, now accounting for 57% of the DO's total production and reaching 100% for Cava de Guarda Superior. For the 18 wineries that carry out the entire production process, up to 1 euro per kilogram may be paid for hand-harvested organic grapes.
The price difference between grapes for Cava de Guarda Superior and Cava de Guarda is maintained, with up to a 27% higher payment for the former, as a measure to reward quality and incentivize winegrowers who opt for lower yields and greater technical and qualitative demands.
These prices have been established despite initial forecasts of a 30% production surplus, as the lack of rain has reduced vineyard yields, leading wineries to acquire more grapes than initially anticipated.
