The Diputació de Lleida presented on Wednesday in la Vansa i Fórnols a new 3.5 million euro initiative to boost public housing in municipalities at risk of depopulation.

Vice-president Agustí Jiménez explained that the funds are aimed at town councils within the Rural Municipality Statute. The village of la Vansa i Fórnols, located in the Alt Urgell region, serves as a model with 18 municipal houses that have helped settle 35 residents in a community of fewer than 200 people.

"We are aware of the housing shortage in the province and want to make it easier for more people to live and take root in our villages."

The grants will cover up to 90% of costs for acquiring or renovating residential properties for social rent. This follows a successful first phase where 2.6 million euros funded 44 homes across 33 rural municipalities.
