Students are facing the exams with a mix of nerves, anxiety, and relief after the initial tests. These examinations are crucial for accessing their desired university degree starting in September. The buildings of the University of Lleida in Igualada, encompassing both the Passeig Campus and the Pla de la Massa Campus, are the focal points of academic and student activity during these days.
General sentiment after the first exam, Spanish Language and Literature, has been positive. Many students found the test manageable and without major surprises. This initial contact with the PAU often serves to break the ice after weeks of intensive preparation. The pressure for cut-off grades is high, as the final score, combined with the high school transcript, will determine access to the most sought-after degrees.
One of the notable novelties of this year's exams are the random checks for electronic devices. In Igualada, an audit was conducted using a mobile phone detector at the Passeig Campus. According to Martí Puigduran, president of one of the examination boards, the test went smoothly and did not disrupt the exam's progress. The system identifies potential active devices and initiates intensive monitoring in the flagged area, but does not automatically confiscate the phone.
This measure, which was also implemented in Manresa after Igualada, aims to enhance control over the misuse of mobile phones and smartwatches during exams. Technology, while a helpful tool, also presents a challenge in ensuring the integrity of the tests.
The start of the PAU was also influenced by the possibility of flexibility due to a teacher's strike and a papal visit. Examination boards received instructions to allow for some leniency regarding justified late arrivals. Abel Valverde, president of another examination board in Igualada, confirmed clear guidelines were provided, although the day proceeded normally in Anoia with no significant delays.
The first day of the PAU in Anoia concluded without major incidents, beyond the typical pre-exam nerves. Students now face the final stretch of their examinations, with their sights set on Thursday afternoon, when they can finally put the PAU behind them and begin contemplating their scores and future university studies.
