The Catalan Government has relaunched the Transversal Railway Axis (EFT) project this March, allocating 5 million euros for in-depth technical studies of the infrastructure.

The project features 254 kilometers of new high-speed tracks, allowing passenger trains to reach 250 km/h. This would enable a direct connection between Lleida and Girona in approximately sixty minutes.
Due to the mountainous terrain between Igualada, Manresa, and Vic, the plan requires nearly 240 kilometers of tunnels. This massive engineering challenge is being compared to major European projects like the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

The Transversal Railway project would only benefit the three connected capitals, bypassing connections with other towns.

The decision follows recent discussions with the Spanish Ministry of Transport regarding high-speed connections. Local authorities are focusing on the section between Lleida and Martorell to improve regional integration.
