Palm tree affected by the red palm weevil in Plaça del Rei, Igualada.

The Igualada City Council removed a Canary Island date palm from Plaça del Rei this Thursday as a precautionary measure.

The decision was made after confirming the tree's irrecoverable state due to irreversible damage caused by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) pest.
The red palm weevil is a borer beetle that deeply attacks palm trees. The City Council has consistently monitored the specimen, applying periodic phytosanitary treatments since 2018, along with surgical and sanitation interventions.
Recent technical reports confirm that the palm's crown is completely affected and shows no signs of growth, leading to progressive structural deterioration.
To prevent any risk from the degradation of its tissues, the tree has been removed and will be replaced.
