Igualada ranks as the second Catalan municipality with over 20,000 inhabitants to have the highest proportion of pensioners, reaching 21.8% of its population.

The city of Igualada has positioned itself as the second Catalan municipality with over 20,000 inhabitants to have the highest presence of pensioners, registering 21.8% of the total population. This figure is only surpassed by Esplugues de Llobregat, which reaches 23%, and matches that of Cerdanyola del Vallès. The proportion in Igualada is almost two and a half points higher than the Catalan average, which stands at 19.4%.
According to data from the Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat) for 2025, Igualada has 9,263 recipients of contributory pensions out of a total population of 42,449 inhabitants. Of these, 5,006 are women (54%) and 4,257 are men (46%), highlighting the female majority within the group.
At the regional level, Anoia has 25,713 pensioners out of a population of 129,956 inhabitants, representing 19.8%, slightly above the Catalan average. Smaller municipalities within the region show even higher percentages, such as Calonge de Segarra (34.6%) or Castellfollit de Riubregós (30.1%). Among the larger municipalities, Capellades (24.8%) and Calaf (23%) stand out.
The number of pensioners in Anoia has seen a 20.2% increase over the last fourteen years, rising from 21,389 in 2011 to the current 25,713. This trend is part of the progressive aging of the Catalan population, with notable increases also in regions like Osona (+2.8%) and Cerdanya (+2.7%).
In parallel, the average pension amount in Catalonia grew by 4.4% during 2025, reaching 1,575 euros gross per month. Barcelonès leads in higher amounts (1,694 euros), while Terra Alta has the lowest average (1,156 euros). In Igualada, the average is below the Catalan average, reflecting the economic diversity within the pensioner group.
The high proportion of pensioners in Igualada and Anoia highlights future demographic challenges in areas such as healthcare, social services, and elderly support policies, a reality that is increasingly decisive for local policies.
