The Alt Pirineu i Aran Paths Committee, a consultative and participatory body composed of 40 public and private stakeholders, has defined its operational lines for 2026. This entity, under the Institute for the Development and Promotion of Alt Pirineu i Aran (IDAPA), focuses on the management of trails and respectful activities that utilize them.
The director of IDAPA, Amàlia Sanz, emphasized the importance of the trails as a "key infrastructure of the Pyrenees with heritage, identity, and utilitarian values." Consequently, resources are being allocated for their maintenance and promotion, as well as for non-motorized tourist activities that respect these values.
The committee's five working areas include the protection of trails as heritage, respectful use and good coexistence among users, active mobility, health and accessibility, fostering local culture, education, and identity, and tourism, guiding, and signage.
This year, a new grant line will be launched for the creation and updating of municipal trail inventories, aimed at town councils, decentralized municipal entities, and comarcal councils in the Alt Pirineu i Aran. This initiative, with a budget of 125,000 euros, aims to assist municipalities, especially smaller ones, in developing a mandatory tool that includes georeferenced digital databases and general maps.
The plan also includes training sessions on the traditional dry stone construction method, its relationship with biodiversity, and the tourism potential of this ecological technique. Furthermore, a report will be commissioned on the civil liability of trail owners, covering duties, damages, jurisprudence, and insurance.
The trail network will be promoted as a tool for improving collective health through Nordic walking sessions, in collaboration with the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS), and healthy itineraries and accessibility to the natural environment will be encouraged.
In the cultural sphere, the second issue of SENdÈRIA magazine will be published and presented at the Camin’ART Festival in Pont de Suert. The third edition of the micro-story contest, an itinerant exhibition, and educational projects in institutes and schools will also take place.
Finally, the eleventh edition of the Pyrenean Hiking Festivals will be held, with climate change as the central theme, and a dialogue space will be created to enhance the work of guides. The committee's second plenary session is scheduled for next November.
