The Parliament of Catalonia has approved a significant amendment to the Municipal and Local Government Law to protect the institutional uniqueness of Aran.

The reform, passed on February 25, establishes that general Catalan regulations will only apply to the Aran Valley as a supplement. This change ensures that the Conselh Generau d'Aran's powers are not limited by laws designed for standard municipalities.

"Institutional uniqueness cannot remain in the symbolic realm; it must have legal consequences."

This legal step follows the agreement reached by the Generalitat – Conselh Generau d'Aran Bilateral Commission in January 2025, moving from de facto recognition to full legal consolidation of Aran's political autonomy.
