The Brown Bear Cross-Border Monitoring Group has reported that 54 brown bears were identified in the Catalan Pyrenees during 2025, following extensive field tracking.

Across the entire Pyrenees range, the total population is estimated at 108 bears. This monitoring effort involves the Generalitat, the Conselh Generau d'Aran, and the governments of Andorra, France, Aragon, and Navarre. Despite the stable total numbers, birth rates have seen a sharp decline.
Only 3 cubs were born in Catalonia this year, compared to 12 in the previous period. For the whole mountain range, 8 births were recorded, a major decrease from the 24 cubs detected last year. Additionally, 10 bears are considered dead or missing.
The local population includes 30 males and 13 females. Wildlife rangers in Alt Pallars also discovered the remains of a sub-adult female that died during 2024.
