A skier died yesterday afternoon after being caught by an avalanche while skiing off-piste at the Baqueira Beret resort, forcing rescue teams to continue the search today to rule out a second victim.

The incident took place at 4:30 p.m. in the Barranc de Laveja area, after the control room received an alert. The Pompièrs d’Aran were responsible for rescuing the man, who had ascended via the Dossau chairlift and entered an unmarked area.
Although the skier was quickly located, he was in cardiorespiratory arrest. He was urgently transferred to the Hospital de Vielha, where medical services were unable to save his life, as reported by the Conselh Generau d’Aran.

Rescue teams do not rule out the presence of a second person trapped, as a second pair of skis was found in the avalanche area.

The search, which was suspended yesterday evening, will resume today with the participation of the Pompièrs and the Mossos d’Esquadra de Muntanya to confirm if the victim was alone. This incident occurs amid a high risk of avalanches throughout the Pyrenees, which led Protecció Civil to activate the pre-alert phase of the Allaucat plan.
Furthermore, another skier died yesterday in an avalanche in the Puimestre ravine, off-piste at the Cerler resort, in Benasque (Huesca), highlighting the current dangers of the mountain environment.
