The Alt Pirineu i Aran region recorded a total of 432 births in 2025, a slight decrease of 2% compared to the 441 in 2024. Alt Urgell stands out with 129 registered newborns, a 13.2% increase from the previous year's 114. Alta Ribagorça also saw a notable rise, with 21 newborns (+50%), compared to 14 in 2024. Pallars Jussà followed a similar trend, with 84 births (+10.5%), versus the previous 76.
The overall decline in the region is explained by a downward trend in other counties. Pallars Sobirà reported 34 births, a 29.2% decrease from the 48 in 2024. In the Val d'Aran, births were 45, an 18.2% decrease from the 55 of the previous year. Cerdanya, despite being the second-highest county for births (119), experienced an 11.2% drop from the 134 in 2024. Alt Urgell and Cerdanya together account for 57.4% of the region's total births (248).
The report from the Institut d'Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat) also reveals that 45.1% of newborns in Alt Pirineu and Aran are children of mothers born outside of Spain. This percentage is similar in Alt Urgell (48.8%), Cerdanya (47.9%), Pallars Jussà and Alta Ribagorça (47.6% each), while it is lower in Aran (37.8%) and Pallars Sobirà (23.5%).
Pallars Sobirà has the highest percentage of mothers born in Catalonia (67.6%). At the Pyrenean level, it is followed by Aran (48.9%), Cerdanya (47.9%), Alt Urgell (45.7%), and Pallars Jussà (44.0%). Alta Ribagorça registers 38.1%. Alta Ribagorça (14.3%) and Aran (13.3%) are the areas with the most mothers born in the rest of Spain, exceeding the Catalan average (5.2%).
At the Catalonia level, 54,249 live births were registered in 2025, an increase of 0.8%. The crude birth rate remains at 6.7 per 1,000 inhabitants. The average age at motherhood is 32.8 years, and for the first child, it is 31.8 years. 48.5% of newborns are children of mothers born in Catalonia, 46.3% of foreign-born mothers, and 5.2% of mothers born in the rest of Spain.
Among newborns with foreign-born mothers in Catalonia, the most common origin is Morocco (8.1% of total births), followed by Colombia (1,517), Pakistan (1,345), Honduras (857), and Peru (744). Italian mothers are the most numerous among those born in the European Union (740).
