The Sabadell City Council has presented a review of the actions carried out in educational centers, with an investment of nearly 12 million euros in the last three years. These improvements focus on maintenance, air conditioning, environmental remodeling, and other measures, coinciding with the start of the new school year for the city's nearly 30,000 students. The press conference was held at the Calvet d’Estrella school.
The mayor of Sabadell, Marta Farrés, emphasized that the responsibility for education does not lie with the City Council, despite the investment made. Actions include building improvements, installation of fans, changes in playgrounds, and adaptation of school environments. Furthermore, new interventions exceeding 3 million euros are expected for asbestos removal from the centers.
Air conditioning has been one of the main investment focuses, with over 5.6 million euros allocated. Notably, air conditioning has been installed in all eleven municipal nursery schools, with a budget exceeding 3 million euros. This summer, the Creu Alta, Can Llong, and Joaquim Blume centers were equipped, with the goal of having all of them air-conditioned by the end of the year.
In nursery and primary schools, one thousand fans have been installed in 453 spaces across 30 centers, representing an investment of over 570,000 euros. The mayor acknowledged the limitations of this measure in extreme temperatures, highlighting the need to introduce trees to naturalize spaces and calling for Generalitat support for more advanced solutions like aerothermal systems.
At the Virolet school, where fans were not installed due to it being a new building with its own system, air conditioning reinforcement is planned for this academic year. Additionally, awnings and shades have been installed in over 40 centers, with an investment of 1.5 million euros.
Painting and cladding have accounted for an expenditure of over 2 million euros. This summer, the Calvet d’Estrella school (over 326,000 euros) and the Escola Joan Sallarès i Pla institute were painted. Other centers such as Roureda, Concòrdia, Floresta, and Juan Ramón Jiménez have also been painted, and the Vapor Buxeda Nou nursery school has undergone cladding work. Projects are being prepared for La Romànica, Miquel Carreras, Joanot Alisanda, and La Trama.
Other actions carried out this summer in about twenty centers include repairs to sports courts at Escola Floresta, adaptation of stands at Torreguitart, improvements at Sant Julià, replacement of intercoms at Font Rosella and Arraona, electrical upgrades at Andreu Castells, Pau Casals, Floresta, and Creu Alta, and work on doors at Agnès Armengol, Can Rull, Francesc Bellapart, Espronceda, and Joan Sallarès i Pla.
School environments have also seen over 4 million euros in investments. The remodeling of Granada square and the area around Escola Tarlatana (over 653,000 euros) has been completed. The surroundings of Sant Julià, Samuntada, and Joaquim Blume schools have been renovated with FEDER funds (over 450,000 euros), and those of Amadeu Vives, La Trama, and Joan Montllor with Next Generation funds (over 1.5 million euros).
Among the specific improvements to the environments are the renovation of the access to Can Rull to prevent flooding and new pedestrian crossings in front of the Andreu Castells school and nursery, as well as the improved access to the Els Àngels nursery school.
