Rosa Maria Salgueiro, known for being the spokesperson for Convergència Aranesa in the Conselh Generau d’Aran and vice-president of the Institut d’Estudis Aranesos, has gathered a selection of her articles into a new book. The publication, titled Mots, collects almost a hundred texts published over nearly two years in her opinion column for the newspaper SEGRE.
The articles address daily experiences and events in the Val d'Aran, such as festivals or sports events, always linking them to the use of the Aranese language. Salgueiro highlights the positive reception from readers, who appreciate how the texts reflect life in the valley.
“"The biggest challenge for Aranese is to promote its social use."
Salgueiro points out that while the Institute works on standardizing the language, social use presents a greater challenge. The presence of tourism in the area means that, even though Aranese is taught in schools from ages 3 to 16, Spanish predominates in the streets. To reverse this situation, Salgueiro advocates for the need to fight to increase the use of Aranese, not only from the Academy but also through campaigns involving citizens and businesses.
