The mayor of Vielha and Mijaran, Juan Antonio Serrano (UA), has supported the demands made by the Conselh Generau d’Aran to the central government for improved safety on the N-230 road. However, he believes the initiative should go further, proposing a ban on large trucks in the section between Sopeira and the Aran capital, as he deems it unsuitable for such vehicles.
According to Serrano, this provisional measure would help prevent the high number of accidents involving heavy vehicles that have occurred in recent years on this stretch, specifically between the northern tunnel entrance and the urban area of Vielha. The aim is for the Ministry of Transport to widen the road, a project for which there is no set date and which will require at least two years for studies and planning.
The most recent accident happened last week when a truck overturned without causing injuries. Although most truck accidents on this section (at least four in two years) have not resulted in casualties, they are a cause for significant concern. Serrano argues that "this road was built in an era when trucks were much smaller than they are today."
We do not want the prioritization of the Vielha section in the N-230 works to be delayed until the end.
Furthermore, Convergència Aranesa, the opposition party in the Conselh, is demanding that the Vielha section be prioritized in the planning of the N-230 works. So far, renovations have been carried out from south to north, and the opposition does not want "to delay it until the end," according to their spokesperson, Ròsa Maria Salgueiro.
