A 17-year-old boy from the Bages region is in critical condition at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Manresa after contracting tetanus, health authorities confirmed.

The minor, who belongs to an anti-vaccine family, contracted the infection through wounds sustained during a fall. Tetanus is caused by the Clostridium tetani bacterium, commonly found in soil and dust. Although the disease is not transmissible between humans, it can be fatal if the patient is not vaccinated.

"This is where we have most of the cases in adolescents."

The Department of Health is monitoring areas with low vaccination rates. In Catalonia, measles cases rose by 135% between 2024 and 2025. This global trend has led the WHO to revoke Spain's status as a measles-free country.
