Rubble from a collapsed retaining wall covering parked vehicles on an access avenue to a town.

An eight-meter high retaining wall collapsed early on Wednesday, January 21, at the main access to Cardona, damaging six vehicles parked on Avinguda del Rastrillo without causing personal injuries.

The collapse, which took place around 5 a.m., caused a loud noise that woke up residents in the area. The wall, eight meters high and ten meters wide, is located right at the base of the hill where Cardona Castle stands.
In addition to the six cars affected by the falling rocks, the landslide also damaged utility poles and electrical wiring. Officers from the Local Police and the Bombers de la Generalitat quickly arrived to secure the area and regulate traffic.

The collapse initially forced the closure of traffic in both directions, although one lane has since been reopened to minimize traffic disruption.

The point where the incident occurred is a stretch that has recently been undergoing renovation works since late February 2025, which are still incomplete. Although a connection cannot yet be confirmed, the incident will further delay the normalization of Avinguda del Rastrillo.
The Cardona City Council had already restricted pedestrian access to Camí Nou, a nearby area, due to the recent heavy rain and wind and the high risk of landslides in the vicinity.
