The UVic-UCC, which includes UManresa, has adopted the statement issued by the Associació Catalana d’Universitats Públiques (ACUP) to condemn the assault suffered by Birzeit University, in the West Bank, by the Israeli army on January 6.
The attack occurred during class hours, with students, faculty, and technical staff conducting academic activity on campus, resulting in a dozen injuries. The UVic-UCC denounces that this action violates international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
Universities are civil assets, essential spaces for knowledge and science, where no form of violence has a place, and even less so military violence.
This assault constitutes a blatant violation of humanitarian principles and the right to education of the Palestinian people, and represents a deliberate attempt to ensure that Birzeit University ceases to be a space of freedom.
The UVic-UCC reiterates its rejection of any form of violence and joins the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), calling for true and lasting peace.
