The Department of Health has highlighted that vaccination is the sole method to prevent tetanus, following the hospitalization of a teenager from Bages at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Manresa.

Medical experts warn that surviving the disease does not grant immunity. In Catalonia, the standard schedule includes the hexavalent vaccine at two, four, and eleven months, with essential boosters administered at ages six and twelve.
Adults are also encouraged to receive booster shots at 40 and 65 years old. Additionally, the dTpa vaccine given during pregnancy serves a dual purpose: protecting against whooping cough and strengthening tetanus immunity.
Unvaccinated adults should follow a three-dose protocol to ensure full protection. Health officials stress that in the event of a suspicious wound, individuals should seek medical advice to evaluate the need for an emergency booster dose.
