Preliminary figures from the new waste management system in Monistrol de Montserrat reveal a notable change in how citizens separate waste. Between April and August 2026, the selective collection rate has stood at around 71%, a considerable increase compared to the 21.3% average recorded during 2025.
To properly interpret this data, it is necessary to distinguish between the total amount of waste collected (in tons) and the percentage corresponding to separated fractions. The initial report compares the monthly averages from 2025 with data from April and May 2026, showing a decrease in the 'residual' fraction and an increase in separated fractions.
Detailed tracking up to August 2026 confirms this trend. In that month, a total of 95.12 tons were collected, of which 28.53 tons were from the residual fraction and 66.59 tons were deposited separately, representing 70% of the total.
The accumulated balance between April and August amounts to 407.65 tons collected, with 290.17 tons deposited separately, resulting in an approximate percentage of 71%. This improvement of about 50 percentage points is positive, although the data does not yet cover a full year.
The percentage measures the amount of waste collected in separate fractions, but the quality of this separation and the subsequent treatment of materials must also be assessed to speak of effective recycling. The Monistrol de Montserrat City Council, in collaboration with the Consorci del Bages, will continue working to improve the service and keep the streets clean, thanking residents for their effort in correctly separating waste.
