The new infrastructure, set to become operational from the third quarter of 2029, has been described by the head of the Executive as pioneering. Salvador Illa, accompanied by the Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández, highlighted that the National Reserve of Catalonia is "the result of planning, with a significant investment of 73 million euros" and stated that "these are times of culture and memory, times to have much memory and much culture and more conviction than ever".
The Department of Culture has signed the lease agreement for a newly constructed warehouse in Sant Fruitós del Bages, which will become the headquarters of the National Reserve. The building spans 33,488 m² of built area on a 65,800 m² plot, offering clear zoning for the various uses related to the management and conservation of collections.
Work is currently underway on the conceptual and functional plan to advance the architectural project and begin the adaptation works. These will include configuring the deposit spaces, offices, workshops, as well as the necessary installations for proper conservation, such as an anoxia chamber and climate control systems. All technical and collection adaptation work is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
The creation of the National Reserve is part of the Government's strategy to strengthen preventive heritage conservation and establish a system of national and jointly managed territorial reserves, as outlined in the Plan de Museus de Catalunya. Museus 2030.
