The Cambrils City Council has commenced cleaning operations in the final section of the Riera de Maspujols, from the old railway bridge to the river mouth, to enhance drainage capacity and minimize flood risk.

The work, which began last Tuesday, focuses on removing American reeds (Arundo donax) from the central riverbed and installing a mesh to curb the proliferation of this invasive species. The aim is to increase drainage capacity and reduce flood risk, while preserving reeds on the banks to act as protection against erosion during heavy rainfall.
The Mayor of Cambrils, Oliver Klein, highlighted the necessity of this cleanup as progress, but emphasized the importance of seeking a "definitive solution" with continuous maintenance, a commitment to be addressed in the next term in collaboration with other competent administrations.
The river mouth area, the last 80 meters, is considered a wetland of special protection by the Generalitat de Catalunya and cannot be cleaned. The City Council is also awaiting permission from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) to continue work up to the Vial del Cavet, including cleaning the central bridge. Additionally, the Riudecanyes stream is scheduled for clearing.
The American reed is characterized by its rapid spread, alteration of river courses, and displacement of native species, potentially causing blockages during strong floods. Despite recent storms, no significant impacts have been reported in the stream's vicinity.
