The Fundació Privada Reddis hosted the second session of a conference series dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. The lecture, titled 'Fighting for Utopia. The first months of the war in the towns of Baix Camp', was delivered by historian Àxel Baiget Moreres.
During his presentation, Baiget emphasized the importance of historical dissemination spaces like this cycle for "combating discourses that increasingly normalize Franco's figure." The historian thanked the Fundació Privada Reddis for the opportunity to offer "a regional perspective" on how the Civil War was experienced in the towns of Baix Camp.
The historian contextualized the economic and social situation of the region before the conflict, marked by a predominantly agricultural economy. He highlighted the role of agricultural unions, cooperative wineries, and workers' and republican centers, which had already introduced socialist, anarchist, and Catalanist ideas.
Baiget detailed the four major revolutions experienced by Baix Camp: political, agrarian, feminist, and educational. He emphasized the agrarian revolution, with numerous land confiscations and collectivizations driven by unions and peasant organizations in municipalities such as Prades, Alforja, Montbrió, and Reus.
Another central theme was the feminist revolution, which Baiget placed within the continuity of the women's rights movements initiated in the early 20th century. He explained how many women from Baix Camp actively participated in political, union, and militia life, breaking traditional gender roles. He mentioned figures like Teresa Gibelí, linked to the CNT and originally from l'Aleixar, as examples of political and class consciousness.
The conference also highlighted the educational revolution, with a clear aim to transform teaching and democratize access to knowledge. Furthermore, it addressed the social and political complexity of the period, noting episodes of neighborhood solidarity to protect individuals with right-wing ideologies and religious cultural heritage, despite the violence and revolutionary tension.
The cycle will continue on June 2nd with the conference 'How the Civil War Reached Every Corner of Catalonia: The Case of La Terreta', presented by Lluís Colomés, president of the Fundació Privada Reddis.
