The new electronic device is located at the highest point of Puig de Sant Pere, offering a panoramic view of the Camp de Tarragona plain and the surrounding mountains.
The camera operates autonomously 24 hours a day, combining an optical lens to detect smoke columns and a thermal one to identify temperature variations and flames within a one-kilometer radius. When it detects a suspicious point, it automatically focuses and sends an alert to emergency and security services, improving the response time of firefighters and police.
On its first day of operation, the system detected a smoke column near the Macresac company, allowing emergency teams to be alerted and extinguish a small vegetation fire on a private property.
This measure complements the work of municipal wardens and forest rangers during the summer, especially in a context of intense heat that keeps many Catalan municipalities at maximum fire risk.
The mayor of the municipality, Enric Roberto, highlighted that the technology allows them to anticipate fires and strengthens the council's security measures.
