Construction work to transform the parking lot into a pedestrian square is now underway in Reus. This project, which began on June 30th when the space ceased to function as a car park, represents one of the most significant urban interventions planned for the city center this year. The company RS Agrotècnica del Segrià has been awarded the contract for the works, with a budget of 420,000 euros.
The new square will cover nearly 3,000 square meters in front of the library and the Enological Station. The asphalt and parked vehicles will be replaced by a renaturalized area, featuring trees, abundant vegetation, interior pathways, and spaces designed for relaxation and socializing.
A key feature of the project is the creation of an open-air agora-library. This initiative aims to extend the activities of the Xavier Amorós Library outdoors, hosting readings, presentations, cultural events, and public gatherings. Around this central space, quieter zones and small resting nooks will be established, connected by interior paths. A new drinking water fountain will also be installed.
Greenery will be the main focus of the new design. The project plans a significant increase in trees and vegetation, prioritizing native species or those adapted to the Mediterranean climate. The goal is to create an urban garden with various plant layers to provide more shade, mitigate heat, and promote biodiversity.
The transformation will not affect the area's function as a public transport hub. Existing bus stops will remain, and two new ones, linked to the Bus x Tu service, will be added. The new layout will also improve pedestrian flow between Sunyer promenade, the library, and surrounding streets.
The construction work is scheduled to take 16 weeks. If progress continues as planned, the new square is expected to be completed by autumn.
