Artistic mural dedicated to Antoni Gaudí in Reus.

The city of Reus welcomes from this Friday, May 22nd, the commencement of work on a new large-scale artistic mural dedicated to the figure of Antoni Gaudí. The artwork, spanning nearly 140 square meters, will be created by Extremaduran artist Jonatan Carranza, known as Sojo.

Artist Sojo is now in Reus to begin preparing the wall where the figure of architect Antoni Gaudí and elements related to his life and work will be depicted. The facade of the Sant Joan university residence, near the parish of Sant Joan Baptista, will host this mural measuring 21 meters in height and 6.5 meters in width, titled 'Gaudí, from Reus to the world'.
The muralist has emphasized the importance of capturing Gaudí's Reus origins in the design. Preparation of the concrete support, including cleaning and priming, began today to ensure the artwork's durability. Sojo will use a grid as a guide and will combine spray techniques with plastic paint. The inauguration is scheduled for June 6th, although recognizable elements will start appearing by the end of next week.
The design includes a portrait of Gaudí and a collage that will represent his origins, sources of inspiration, and contributions to the world. The artist aims for the artwork to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings, particularly respecting the color palette of the Sant Joan Baptista church located next door. The objective is for the mural to appear as a continuation of the church.
This project is part of the Gaudí Year celebrations. Sojo, who has an architectural background, has undertaken an immersive creative process, consulting numerous books on Gaudí and visiting Reus beforehand to connect with stakeholders. The artwork is a proposal by the Association Amics de Gaudí de Reus, with a budget of 60,000 euros and support from the Ajuntament de Reus and the Diputació de Tarragona, along with collaboration from Vermuts Miró, Volvo, Repsol, and Escardó Serveis.
This artistic intervention is the first phase of a larger project. Subsequently, digital artist Gala Reglero, known as Gala Mirissa, will bring the piece to life through 3D and augmented reality. Jonatan Carranza, experienced in graffiti since the 90s, has participated in international festivals, receiving recognition for his works.
