The projects in the areas of Pintor Fortuny Square, Carrer Ample, and Plaça de la Llibertat in Reus are nearing their end. The works, which include the installation of urban furniture and landscaping, as well as the cleaning of the 'Condesito' statue, are anticipated to finish during the first week of September. These renovations have expanded pedestrian space by over 1,000 square meters.
The transformation of the street, which began a year and a half ago, has significantly altered the use of space. Previously, Carrer Ample was predominantly designed for vehicles; now, over 60% of the area is dedicated to pedestrian enjoyment. The city council assesses this intervention as "very positive".
“"I appreciate the patience shown by the residents and local businesses, who have had to endure disruptions, machinery, and noise for months."
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Marina Berasategui, has thanked residents and businesses for their patience during the construction period. She also highlighted the collaboration with local inhabitants and workers, whose input has enhanced the final outcome.
Local business owners such as Pasqual Solé, owner of El Pi del Cugat café, and Tomàs Pàmies, co-owner of Sistaré bakery, have positively reviewed the renovation. Solé describes the street as "prettier and more spacious," while Pàmies views any improvement for the city as beneficial.
However, the extended duration of the works has been a drawback for some businesses. Pàmies calls for greater efficiency, particularly given the presence of shops and residents. El Pi del Cugat café, for instance, was unable to use its outdoor seating for seven months due to the construction.
Difficult access to the area also impacted businesses. Marc López, manager of La Rocher Patisserie, notes that many customers travel by car from other parts of Reus. Pàmies adds that vehicle access challenges have hindered customer arrivals at local shops.
These factors led to a decrease in sales for the consulted businesses, further compounded by an approximate two-month delay in the project schedule. According to Councilor Marina Berasategui, the delay was caused by the unexpected discovery of buried electrical services.
The works, awarded to Tecnologia de Firmes SA for 2,285,000 euros, included a credit modification of over 200,000 euros for new features such as smart bollards and traffic lights.
A key objective of the renovation is to enhance the connection between central Reus and Carrer Ample, giving greater prominence to pedestrians. Pasqual Solé anticipates that, in the long term, the street will experience increased activity.
Nevertheless, Marc López and Tomàs Pàmies express more skepticism about a significant rise in customer numbers, doubting whether Carrer Ample will become a new major commercial hub in the city.
