The city of Reus is nearing completion of a new temporary shelter for feral cats, a project expected to be operational this summer to improve the management of feline colonies.

Construction of this municipal facility, located on Cervera Street in the Dyna industrial estate, is underway and is projected to be finished by summer. This center will be crucial for the reception, management, and subsequent return to the streets of animals that have adapted to living freely and are no longer considered domestic.

"We estimate that the completion of the works will be in June."

the Councillor for Environment and Sustainability of the Reus City Council
The works, budgeted at just over 200,000 euros, have experienced a slight delay due to rainfall recorded during the first months of the year. The construction company notified of the meteorological causes, leading to an extension of the contract.
The creation of this space responds to the city council's adaptation to Law 7/2023, of March 28, on the protection of animal rights and welfare. This regulation stipulates that municipalities must have an adequate and conditioned place for the temporary removal of cat colonies when necessary. This initiative complements the animal welfare policies already implemented by the city council in collaboration with entities such as Reus Gats and Nou Refugi Baix Camp, which involve around 250 volunteers.
The center will implement the CER method (capture, sterilization, and return or reinsertion) to control the reproduction of feline colonies. The building is structured into three blocks: one dedicated to veterinary services, administration, and hygiene; an enclosed play yard for the cats; and a third with three shelter kennels and a storage area for feed and other materials. A daily cleaning and sanitization service is planned to provide controlled care for the approximately eighty feline colonies detected in the municipality.
Although the management will be municipal, occasional access will be granted to representatives and volunteers from animal welfare organizations through a digital entry system and video surveillance. The facility will have the capacity to house up to 150 feral cats.
