The Reus City Council will undertake a pending urban development project in the Josep Maria Carreras Dexeus square, located in the Mas Carpa urbanization. The intervention, budgeted at 55,000 euros, aims to renaturalize the space, improve its drainage and accessibility, and adapt it to the effects of climate change.
Currently, the square suffers from a lack of vegetation and compacted soil that hinders water absorption, making it vulnerable to heat and intense rainfall. The project will incorporate draining materials and structural soil to facilitate plant growth and water infiltration.
This initiative was initially part of the RENATUReus plan, funded by European funds, but it stalled. The works, which had partially begun, were not completed, and the European funding was lost due to missed deadlines. Now, the council is addressing the improvement independently.
The space, which serves as a neighborhood meeting point between Clementina Arderiu, Estanislau Mateu i Valls, and Oliver Oliva streets, features benches, a fountain, a petanque area, table tennis tables, and a small outdoor gym. The works are expected to last two months.
The improvement will focus on planting native species or those adapted to the local climate with low water needs, reinforcing existing vegetation without replacing the current trees. The goal is to create more shade, improve water retention, and promote urban biodiversity.
Additionally, the connection and accessibility between the square and Estanislau Mateu i Valls street will be enhanced, resolving the current slope with a new ramp and integrated paving elements.
