Solar Eclipse: Measures to Prevent AP-7 Highway Collapse

Traffic implements a special plan to divert vehicles and ensure highway fluidity during the astronomical event.

The Servei Català de Trànsit has established a special operation to prevent the blockage of the AP-7 highway during the total solar eclipse next Wednesday, visible in the regions of Tarragona and Lleida.

The main objective is to decongest the AP-7 along its Catalan route, from La Jonquera to Amposta, by diverting vehicles to alternative roads. According to the director of the SCT, Ramon Lamiel, efforts will be made to clear the highway, especially the two-lane section from Salou southwards, to avoid excessive loads.
The operation will involve approximately 700 officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra and 15 personnel from the Servei Català de Trànsit, in addition to operators from a subcontracted company installing temporary road measures. This company will double its services, from two to four teams.
Preventive closures are planned at Santa Oliva if necessary, as well as control of access points to the AP-7 from El Vendrell southbound. Truck circulation on the AP-7 southbound, between Martorell and Ulldecona, will be prohibited from 2 PM to midnight.
Drivers arriving at La Jonquera will be informed to divert to the C-25 (Eix Transversal) if heading towards Ponent. In Martorell, traffic bound for Lleida will be rerouted to the A-2 (La Panadella).
At the Santa Oliva junction between the AP-7 and AP-2, vehicles heading towards Lleida, Les Borges Blanques, Valls, or Prades will be directed via the AP-2. To reach Prades, the exit at Montblanc is recommended, following the N-240 to Vimbodí and then the TV-7004.
At El Vendrell, vehicles heading to the Camp de Tarragona and Tarragonès will be diverted to the A-7 and N-340. Subsequently, in Tarragona, they will exit towards the T-11 and N-420 to reach municipalities in Baix Camp or Constantí.
The Ebro Delta area is expected to be a significant attraction point. The AP-7 will have four monitored exits: L'Ametlla de Mar, L'Ampolla, L'Aldea, and Amposta. A helicopter and ground teams will control these routes to prevent congestion.
The N-340 road will be crucial for distributing traffic to the local network, with regulation by the Mossos at L'Ampolla, Camarles, L'Aldea, and Amposta. Special attention will be paid to L'Ampolla to direct traffic towards Deltebre.
The entire operation will be coordinated from the 112 building in Reus, where all emergency services will be stationed.
