The CUP party has formally asked the Catalan Government when it plans to resume the removal of the Francoist monument in Tortosa, located in the Baix Ebre region.

The request follows a Supreme Court decision to reject appeals from far-right groups that sought to preserve the monolith. The CUP argues that the presence of this tribute to the dictatorship is incompatible with democratic principles and asks the executive to urge the courts to lift the current injunction on the works.

"The removal of this monument is not just an administrative or urban issue, but also an act of democratic memory."

The political initiative also seeks clarification on the budget allocated for the removal and which government department will be responsible for the costs. While local activists celebrate the judicial progress, the COREMBE group has stated its intention to explore all remaining legal avenues to keep the monument in the Ebro river.
