The environmental group GEPEC-EdC has submitted objections to the modification and repowering project for the Baix Ebre wind farm, located in Tortosa. The company Parc Eòlic del Baix Ebre SA (PEBESA) proposes replacing the current 27 wind turbines, operational since 1995, with 3 new large-scale turbines, approximately 100 meters in height.
According to GEPEC-EdC, this modification would maintain the plant's current power output (4.05 MW) but could potentially triple its energy production. Environmentalists point out that the wind farm is situated within the protected natural area of Serres de Cardó-Boix, part of the Natura 2000 network.
The organization denounces the lack of a complete and submitted fauna study, considered 'fundamental' for assessing the impact of the new turbines. GEPEC-EdC asserts that PEBESA 'does not adequately demonstrate' the installation's compatibility with the conservation of the protected area's natural values and warns of potential 'severe limitations' for the new project.
Environmentalists advocate for the dismantling of the current project and the regeneration of the occupied area. They recall that the Baix Ebre wind farm was one of the first in Catalunya, and current legislation, particularly for ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) zones like Boix Cardó, is incompatible with such installations.
