The plenary session of the Tortosa City Council has unanimously approved the appointment of journalist Josep Bayerri as the new official chronicler of the city, an honorary position he will hold for five years.

The decision stems from a request by the board of the Terres de l'Ebre division of the Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya, submitted in September 2025. After a regulatory ordinance was approved and the public exhibition period passed without objections, the proposal received the plenary's approval in March. The position required a two-thirds majority, but it was ultimately approved unanimously.
This historical role in Tortosa dates back to 1894, when canon Ramon O’Callaghan was the first to hold the title. Other notable chroniclers include Federico Pastor (1912), Francesc Mestre i Noè (from 1923), Enric Bayerri (1941), and Manuel Beguer (1959-1970).
Josep Bayerri Raga, born in 1944, has a diverse professional career as a journalist, as well as in the fields of architecture, construction, urban planning, and education. He founded and directed publications such as the weekly newspaper Ebre Informes and currently collaborates with Setmanari l’Ebre. He was also part of the editorial board of El Punt and promoted the Associació de Comunicadors de la Regió de l'Ebre. In politics, he was a founder of the PSC in Terres de l'Ebre, a driving force behind the Assemblea Democràtica del Baix Ebre, a councilor for the Tortosa City Council in 1983, and held positions within the UGT of Catalonia.
During the same plenary session, support was also given to a motion by ERC to implement a tram-train system in Terres de l'Ebre, a proposal put forward by the platform Trens i Transports Dignes de les Terres de l’Ebre i del Priorat.
