The president of the Catalan Association of Women of the Sea, Leidy Johanna Aya Veja, is spearheading a movement from Deltebre to highlight the essential role of women in the local fishing industry.

Professional fishing in Catalonia is deeply rooted in the Ebre Delta region. Leidy Johanna Aya, originally from Colombia, has become a key figure in Deltebre as a shipowner and advocate for women who have historically been relegated to unpaid support roles such as net mending and financial management.

"Women have always been present in the maritime sector throughout history, but often from the periphery of officialdom."

The association now has 170 members across various fields of the blue economy. Despite their importance, fewer than five women currently work as professional fishers or captains in Catalonia. The organization aims to create a network of role models for future generations to ensure the sustainability of coastal communities.
