Mar Lleixà (ERC) was invested as the new mayor of Tortosa on Saturday, January 10, replacing Jordi Jordan (Movem-PSC) after two and a half years, securing support from the coalition and the CUP.

The investiture of Mar Lleixà took place in an extraordinary plenary session, where she obtained 11 votes in favor (Movem-PSC, ERC, and CUP), surpassing the 10 votes received by the opposition leader, Meritxell Roigé (Junts). This handover occurs halfway through the mandate, as established in the government agreement signed by the coalition parties.

"I will work tirelessly, with commitment, enthusiasm, and determination."

In her speech, Lleixà highlighted the historical significance of her appointment, being the first Republican woman mayor of the city in 87 years. She recalled the figure of the last Republican mayor, Josep Rodríguez, executed by the Franco regime in 1939, and assured that democratic memory will be a central axis of her government.
The new mayor committed to promoting projects such as the Neighborhood Plan and working to improve train frequencies and the construction of the third lane on the AP-7 highway. Furthermore, she announced the creation of a new council department to protect and preserve the Catalan language and urged the opposition to abandon “tension” and engage in constructive politics.

"For many people, when this happens, it will symbolize the moment when Tortosa stops looking back and starts looking forward; it is a historical grievance that must be resolved as soon as possible."
