The main trade union organizations of the Terres de l'Ebre, including CCOO, UGT, and USOC, marched in a united front to demand a change in labor and social policies. The protest underscored the rising cost of living and the importance of defending social and democratic rights.
“"The parliamentary decision represents a direct attack on the working class and shows that some parties have lost their shame and openly vote against the interests of the social majority."
A CCOO spokesperson criticized the state political situation and the recent vote in Congress on the housing law, warning that housing has become a structural problem. They also called for continuous mobilization, beyond May Day, to defend labor rights.
From USOC, a representative highlighted the deteriorating working conditions in the territory, denouncing the abuse of temporary and part-time contracts. They emphasized the need to «humanize work» and pointed out that the cost of living is rising much faster than wages, creating unsustainable situations for many families.
The UGT spokesperson thanked participants and warned that the working class is in a daily struggle to make ends meet. They denounced the rise of the right-wing and the vote of political parties against the interests of workers. They also mentioned the situation of street cleaning in Tortosa and Amposta, where staff have endured years of frozen salaries due to public tenders that do not foresee salary increases.
Workers from a cleaning company in Tortosa are preparing mobilizations that could lead to a strike, coinciding with important events such as the Renaixement or the Festes de la Cinta, if there are no advances in their demands. Additionally, school monitors, known as «vetlladores», also mobilized to denounce a violation of rights after a change in the contracting company, which left them without social coverage for a week.
The demonstration proceeded along Avinguda Generalitat to the Town Hall square in Tortosa, concluding with a joint call from the unions to maintain mobilization for the defense of labor rights, decent housing, and salary improvements.
