Tortosa City Council has begun the process to rebuild the municipal slaughterhouse, destroyed by a fire in February 2024, with an estimated cost of 2.8 million euros.

The council has taken the first step by tendering the drafting of the executive project and the site management for 125,019 euros. This action is essential to recover an infrastructure that suffered severe structural damage, forcing the demolition of the building located in the Baix Ebre industrial estate.
The facilities were managed by a joint venture with majority municipal ownership. Following the closure caused by the fire, the company proceeded to lay off the staff. Before the incident, the center had an annual production capacity of one million kilograms and served the entire meat sector in the Terres de l'Ebre region.
To ensure service continuity for users, the local administration reached an agreement with a slaughterhouse in Burriana, in the province of Castellón. The council has covered the additional costs of moving operations outside the municipality while working on the recovery of its own facility.
