In Puigcerdà, expansion works have commenced at the Senior Community Center, a facility managed by the Cerdanya County Council, operational since its inauguration in May 2025. The expansion is a response to the high number of users and will provide new, larger, and more adapted spaces.
The president of the Cerdanya County Council, Isidre Chia, highlighted the growing participation at the center, which attracts more individuals from across the county as well as summer visitors from Barcelona. The aim is to offer more workshops and enhance the user experience.
The construction involves building a new 300-square-meter annex adjacent to the current building in Plaça del Rec, Puigcerdà. Additionally, the council's gardens are being renovated to improve accessibility and aesthetics, with measures taken to enclose the area and prevent vandalism.
Costing approximately 600,000 euros and funded by the Generalitat's Single Plan for Works and Services, the project faced delays due to the late issuance of the building permit, which was granted in May after being requested the previous November. These delays necessitated adapting the work methodology, using smaller machinery and adhering to municipal ordinances that restrict street occupation in August.
During the construction, an archaeologist monitored the site due to its archaeological risk status. No significant remains were discovered, allowing the works to proceed without major disruption.
