The Tortosa City Council has introduced the first volunteers for the Cuidem Temple project, an initiative for citizen participation to combat uncivil behavior in the neighborhood.

The Tortosa City Council has kicked off the Cuidem Temple project, a pilot plan for citizen participation, volunteering, and civility. The aim is for this initiative, which already has its first volunteers, to gradually extend to other neighborhoods in the city and the municipality's five towns.
The idea emerged a few months ago following a session of A Coffee with the Mayor, where two residents proposed collaborating with the administration to address uncivil behavior detected in the neighborhood. The mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, detailed that the creation of a group of civic volunteers was considered a suitable response.
Linked to the Tortosa Volunteer Office, the volunteers will operate from the premises of the Temple Neighborhood Association. Initially, they will go out on the street once a week, properly identified and accompanied by municipal civic agents, maintaining direct contact with the Local Police.
In the coming weeks, they will receive specific training from civic agents to learn how to effectively address citizens, avoiding conflicts. Their role will be purely informative, educational, and awareness-raising, without any sanctioning or control powers.
To raise citizen awareness, the volunteers plan to set up a monthly information booth with civic agents. They will also distribute leaflets and materials provided by Acciona, the cleaning service concessionaire, addressing behaviors such as not picking up pet waste, feeding pigeons or cats outside designated colonies, discarding trash improperly, or parking in pedestrian crossings.
The official presentation took place after a meeting at the Temple Neighborhood Association's premises. The City Council is counting on the residents' cooperation to positively embrace this initiative, which seeks to promote responsible attitudes and the care of public space as a common good.
Mayor Mar Lleixà thanked the volunteers for their commitment and generosity, highlighting them as an example of active participation. This pilot project will serve to evaluate results and gather experiences, with a view to future expansion to other areas of the municipality, aiming to build a cleaner, tidier, and friendlier Tortosa.
